If I can’t read the book, I’ll read about the book.
I read the GoT wiki. It really elevates the historical fantasy aspect.
My comic book knowledge was initially obtained by my cousin’s big encyclopedia of superheroes, when I was nine, and this introduction expanded my interest in comic books.
This should be seen as supplemental reading (keep in mind a lot of the books I’m referring to have “guide” in the subtitle), allowing one to address the original source more quickly when they already know the central plot themes, and rather than figuring out what happens, one is trying to elucidate how it happened.
